Online hate: what to do

A racist message, a wave of hateful comments, threats: seven simple steps to protect yourself, keep solid evidence and assert your rights in France.

By The Collective’s board1 min read

Being targeted by online hate is violent. These steps help you protect yourself and keep every chance of asserting your rights.

1. Get safe

If you are threatened or in immediate danger, call 17 or 112. Don’t stay alone: talk to someone you trust.

2. Keep the evidence

Take screenshots showing the content, the account name, the date and the page address. Write down the exact address (URL) of each post. Don’t delete messages you received: they are evidence.

3. Don’t reply

Replying often feeds harassment. Block the author and report the content using the platform’s tools.

4. Report on Pharos

For illegal online content (racist insult, incitement to hatred, threats), file a report on internet-signalement.gouv.fr, the French police platform.

5. Get help

  • 3018: national helpline against online violence, free, anonymous and confidential.
  • 116 006: victim support, free.
  • 39 28: the Defender of Rights, for discrimination.

6. File a complaint

At a police station, or by letter to the public prosecutor. Bring your screenshots and page addresses. For racist or religious insults and incitement, the time limit to act is one year.

7. Write to the Collective

Our report form accepts links, screenshots, videos, PDFs and ZIP archives. The board reviews it, can refer it to the competent bodies and guides you.
